Having honors and AP courses definately help. Penn State is not easy to get into on main campus for out of state students. PSU is the greatest university in the world though, so work as hard as you can to get in. Good grades, SAT, extracaricular, and course all play a roll.

I think it depends on how popular the major you want to study is too. I'm a girl in engineering and I got in without having any AP courses or honors credits. My GPA was around 3.8.
