Why should diamonds only be worn in the evening? Life is meant to be enjoyed and if wearing a sparkly trinket (albeit costly) makes one happy, why should anyone else care?
I have a bottle of incredibly expensive perfume I got for Christmas a few years ago and always waited for just the right occasion to wear it. Well, a few years later, it still sat unopened on my dresser. Chances are it may be more years before just the right occasion ever arrives and by then, there will be very little scent left to it. That is, if I'm still alive when that special occasion does happen.
I've recently decided to wear it as often as possible. Yes, I wear it when I go grocery shopping or when I'm washing my car or even mowing the lawn. Major faux pas? Possibly.
Am I hurting or insulting anyone? Nope. Does it bother me knowing others may think I'm "over the top" for wearing an expensive perfume during the day instead of the evening? Once again, nope!
Am I enjoying something nice that someone was generous to give to me? You betcha!
The only guarantee any of us has is that we're alive at this very moment, so if wearing a type of jewelry or perfume for this moment makes me or another person happy, so be it.

I agree with RedHead, but this IS something I was always taught growing up. Not engagement rings, though; engagement rings are A-OK any time of day.
I guess it's that some women get carried away and end up looking cheap and ostentatious. Less is more. Classier.
There's actually a history behind all this "diamonds in the daytime" debate. Unfortunately, I can't remember the details.
Oh, and BTW, I don't think it's just diamonds that are a no-no. I think this "fashion edict" applies to any kind of flashy gemstone. (Like emeralds, rubies, etc.)
I also think this may be an 'Old South' tradition. Maybe?

Women who like jewelry are a major turn off.
By the way, faux pas are fathers of French foxes.

Life is so short. If women have diamonds and love them, they should be able to wear and enjoy them. (faux pas or not)

Thats insane. What? I'm not supposed to wear my engagement ring in the daytime? That's silly.
