The water pump needs replacing in our car...I just spent $432 getting nessecary repairs done to it. I took it to a friend who knows cars...well at least i think he does. He said a mechanic MUST do the repairs..somthing about a timing belt..i dunno I suck with cars.anyway, he also said it would be about $300!!!!! I DO NOT have that lol. Is there anyway to do it with a friend? or is he right? will it actually be $300??

If you don't know anything about cars then you must take it to a garage, you WILL cause more damage if you try it yourself!
timing belts are not that difficult if you have a good mechanical knowledge, get it wrong though and it'll cost you more like $800 to put right.
Get friendly with a mechanic.
good luck!

300 sounds high, but the timing belt must be removed for this repair. water pump is behind timing belt. a local to you shop or the dealer are your best bet for a satisfactory repair, while you are there you should probably replace the timing belt and tensioner/idler/hand grenade.this will put you back a little but then you wont have to face it again for a long time. [do not let the neon engine overheat even a little and you will have to resurface the head] good luck

it may be more cost-effective to purchase the equipment and a e book than to pay a save. Don,t be scared and dig into it If the water pump is going than your timingbelt will snap and it truly is an interference engine so if that is going your in a international of crap.

OK, In a nut shell. Take it to a shop.
If you attempt the repairs and fail, you will have messed up the project for the mechanic and he will probably tell you he won't work on it. Or charge you even more!
