O.K., three people rented a room, the clerk charged thirty dollars,each person paid ten dollars a peice.
After the threesome had departed for their siesta the clerk realized that he had over charged them by five dollars, so he sent the change up with the bellboy. During his journey the bellboy took two of the dollar bills for himself, leaving one dollar a peice to the tennants. So, our three people paid nine dollars a peice, the bellboy has two of the dollars, they originally paid thirty, so where is the missing dollar?

First of all, this question has already been asked on Yahoo Answers, probably about 2 months ago. The answer is there is no missing dollar. If the real charge was only $25, then their combined $30 payment yielded $5 in change and the bellboy got a $2 tip. They didn't pay $9 a piece, they paid $8.33 each. 8.33 x 3 = 24.99, they each got $1 back so that brings total to 27.99, so that leaves $2.01 for the bellboy.

It's still there......$25 to the hotel, $3 to the three, and $2 to the bellboy.

The clerk took it???
I don't know. It's one of those perplexing statements like where if you count backwards on your fingers, you can prove you a combination of 11 fingers and thumbs- call your little finger number 10, and count down, by the time you get to your thumb you're on number six. Now we know that there are 5 digits left to count, so just add that onto the 6. 6+5=11

$8.33 a person for the hotel X 3= $24.99
$0.66 a person for the bellboyX3= 1.98
$1.00 a person for the money back= 3.00

TOTAL= $29.97

and the bellboy got 2 more pennies & someone else gets a penny for $30.00

You can not multiply subtract and then divide without adding first. It's a math rule everything has its order, it's all in the way the story is told.

It's an old but faithful riddle it always gets people frustrated. Good one!

The dollar is still there. This is one of those math problems that cannot be worked using backwards math. There are several like that. Nice try, though.
