Good hitters hit with 2 strikes.
Pitchers can only throw so many pitches in a game before they lose their affectiveness, thus, taking pitches means he has to throw more pitches and then may not be able to pitch affectively as the game goes on. Baseball is a very long season, batters know how to wear down entire pitching staffs to the point of being inaffective by the end of the season.
Also, batters can get a better feel of how a pitcher will try to get him out if he can see more of his pitches.
There are many more reasons too, but I am bored with this question and would like to move on. Tanks 4 2

Apparently you've never pitched.....go try hitting a target 3 out of 6 chances.

Usually taking a strike has more tha 1 reason to it.

The pitcher may not have complete control... rather than possibly making a swing at a bad pitch (outside the strike zone)
It is not really taking a pitch as much as making the strike zone smaller...if there are no strikes as a batter you are looking for a pitch you can hit. and hit well.
If the count is 3 balls and no strikes, you're more likely to draw a walk than get a hit..... unless the pitch is placed where YOU as a hitter can hit it good.

Another reason and example of taking a pitch. Say you have a fast runner on first base. By not swinging at the first pitch or waiting till the pitcher can throw 2 strikes before you swing. It can allow the runner to try to steal second base. This will put him into scoring position...if you get a basehit he can score 98% of the time while on second.
Also if he steals second, and you hit a groundball there is no chance for a double-play. And the runner could also move to third base. Which he can score various ways without the next batter even getting a basehit.

the answer to this question is based in strategy and philosophy of the indivual. For the batter its a matter of getting a look at the pitchers motion, velocity and mechanics. Taking a strike will help the batter focus on the rest of the at bat. The percentages are in the favor of the batter that the first pitch thrown will not be a strike therefore giving the batter one or more looks at the pitchers stuff.
Now from a coaching and team standpoint it may not be the batters choice to as to whether to take a strike or not. The Coach may demand that this happen which some batter take as being put in hole and under pressure. Its all in the philosophy.

A good batter won't let an extra strike get to him.Taking a strike lets the batter see how the pitcher throws.A lot of times you will see the first batter that a pitcher faces do this. It's to let his other teammates get a look at what the pitcher throws before they get into the batters box.

1. It makes the pitcher throw at least one extra pitch
2. It lets the batter see the pitchers delivery
3. If the pitcher has been inconsistent, he may wait for a strike before swinging
4. If a runner is straight stealing
5. If the coach implies it

Just because it is a strike doesn't mean that the batter can hit it. If it is outside corner they may not be able to do much with it.

Making sure the pitcher could get the ball over the plate. Some hitters hit better with two strikes. You become more defensive and alert at the plate, looking to just make contact

there are so many answers to this question. one could be that the hitter feels more comfortable with a strike. if a hitter takes two strikes then there is something wrong with him/her or its a 3-0 count and they are making the pitcher throw to him/her.

If you are over the age of 15, this is a lousy question. Get off the computer and watch more baseball. The first answer pretty much has it right.
