I just set up a website and went live on Saturday. Yet I check to see if I could search for my website on search engines did not find it? How long does it usually take for a site to become a 'hit' on a search engine?

Depends on how soon the search engines find you. Unless there is a link somewhere to take them to your website, they may never find it. The more links, the sooner.

So you need to have all your friends who have (real) websites (MySpace does not count) put in a link to you site. Eventually one of the search engines will finds its way to your site.

You can also go to the bottom of Yahoo, Google, and most other search engines and there will be a link to submit a site. Fill in that form and you can submit it for free. Usually takes 3-4 months for them to process such request.

So be patient. It usually takes several weeks, if not months. There are a few thousands new web pages added to the Internet every day. So it takes time.

I believe that most search engines are based on popularity, meaning that websites are surfaced by the views or searches that they have tallied up. Maybe trying a different kind of search engine than Google and Yahoo. . .try Search.com or any other one you haven't heard of. Chances might be that it'll work. . .

It depends on the search engine as well as where your site is hosted.
Most search engines have scanners (spiders) that constantly search the internet and look for keywords in the meta-tags and content to rate the pages. Every one is different and they are very secretive about how they work.

I'm not quite sure, but I'm assuming once you start getting traffic on the site (like people going to it) or after a few weeks. :)
