Well, we started out with a repulic. That is what the founding fathers wanted. ("And to the REPUBLIC for which it stands... ahem..)"
Then somehow we went into a Democracy. Then we spent a few years in a quasi-socialist-democracy, now we are heading into the National Socialist party, otherwise known as Nazi regime, and soon a dictatorship.

America is a federal republic. The federal part means that it is formed by a number of self-governing states united by a federal government. The republic part means that you do not have a monrachy. Instead people elect officials to represent them for a fixed period of time. Elected officials, like the president, senators, etc, are accountable to the voters. This is known as representative democracy.
America is an example of a presidential system. This means that you elect a president, and you elect senators and congressmen. In the parliamentary system, which is what you have in Britain, you elect members to parliament, and they, in turn, name a prime minister.

These are some of the goofiest, made-up answers (guesses, really) I've ever read. I am delighted to report that the first answer is not only the simplest, it is totally correct.
We are a republic. If you need to know the difference between a republic and a democracy, do some research. Or you could ask another question, and I suspect Sicilia will answer it correctly, once again.
