My neighbor seems to be in big debt so he gave my phone number to law offices and collection agencies. Now I’m receiving calls when they are looking for him. Is this some kind of ID theft and what I should do to stop it.

If he came over and ask to use your telephone and he called the collection agencies..........its possible that they have caller id and got your number from there........So, before you jump the gun maybe give your neighbor the benefit of the doubt and ask him......I know this has to be aggravating as hell for you......some of those collection agencies can be very rude...................

Get the agencies name, address telephone number. Write them a letter to tell them to stop calling and possibly give them the right information if you have it. By law they have to stop calling you after they recieve written notice from you that you do not want them to call you. Look up the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Sue the pants off of them if they continue to call you.

why did you do such a thing in the first place? change your phone number or disconnect it temporarily would probably stop everyone from bothering you completely. if you don't want to do this, just remember that whenever they search for this person on the records, your number will always come up. if you don't know your neighbor that well, please don't give them your infos. you're kind person to do that but these days, theres too many hustlers out there. be a little careful next time

When they call just tell them that it is the neighbor they want and give them the neighbors address and to not call you again. You have that right. If they have never done business with you, they cannot call you. Are you on the do not call list? I'm sorry your neighbor is such a schmuck.

Easy. Accept the calls and correct their information. Give them your neighbor's number instead.

First of all I would go to your neighbors and tell him for every call you have to answer....(and do this it will work) you take their name(bill collectors) and number....keep it in a notebook, write date and time.

Tell your neighbors you are charging them $20.00 pr phone call taken. For being an answering service and delivering messages to them.

Then you can take them to small claims court when they don't pay, and when they don't pay from there, you may be able to file a lein on their home until they do.

Alls fair in neighborhood disputes!

Your neighbor should have asked you. Call a lawyer. I'm not sure it is ID theft or fraud, but it is awfully close.

when they call inform them that they have a wrong number. then give them his address. tell them the whole story if you need to. if you have his phone number give that to them as well.
