I'm going to turn that answer back at you. "Why would it NOT be important to study the history of the U.S.?"
There is a saying: People who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. America has been at war with another country or culture for 18 years for each year of peace ever since it came into being in 1776. America is, probably the most war mongering nation the world has ever known... except, perhaps, Rome... and we all know how that City State ended up.
If you don't KNOW the history of the U.S., then how can you know when the government is sticking it too you? How can you know when your Constitutional Rights have been trashed, if you don't know what the Constitution IS. How can you possibly know or understand what America stands for or how the Government is taking the country in the wrong direction.
There is much, much more to American History than the Revolutionary War but the East Coast establishment would never let you know it. There are many more issues that resulted in the Civil War than the rather minor issue of Slavery but the people who re-write history would have you believe that was the ONLY reason for the Civil War.
Much of this country is tied to Manifest Destiny and the rampany westward expansion leading to the Mexican War.
SO... just why do YOU think it is important to study the history of America.
