zola and di matteo were the only exceptions to this unwritten rule. (and in fact they didnt play much for the national team after leaving for england). the fact is that if you dont play in italy, people, and the national team coach, wil tend to forget you.
of course now that cannavaro and zambrotta have gone to spain things will change but yes, they better play really good or people might start thinking that they are getting old...

It's an Italian Football Tradition to have it's players play in Seria A, the toughest league on earth!

Look at a player like Zola, for example! He was extraordinary with Chelsea FC, but he didn't play in Seria A, so the coaches never selected him! But in the end, it all comes down to the coach's decesion! I know for sure that coaches like Sacchi, Capello, Maldini, etc. will not choose a player who plays out of Italy!

But I do not know about Donadoni. With the current Captain playing in spain, it would be very interesting to see if the final of Germany 2006 was his last game with the Azzurri! If it is, the captain's band would be passed on to the best leader on the team, and since Italy's captains are traditionally defenders, Alessandro Nesta would be the new skipper for Italy!
But if Donadoni calls up Cannavaro and the rest playing outside of Italy, it would be a first!!!

Forza Italia!!!

Although all of their current squad plays in Italy, I dont think they would disallow an amazing player because they played in another country. I think a major factor in this is the players that do play in Italy are more accessable i.e they see them play more.

I agree 100% with Luve112!

And although Zola played a couple of times for Italy, according to the answer above me, it was in meaningless matches--> international friendlies!!

Zola did play for Italy a couple of times for Italy while he was at Chelsea.

He scored a peach against England !

He didn't make the squad for France 98, because Roberto Baggio was picked in front of him.

The FIFA rule states that if you play an official FIFA game for another country you cannot represent the another country in another FIFA official game.
It varies also if you play as a youth for a national team and then you get selected for the adult national team of your other country.
Lets say you're Argentinian and you've got the Peruvian citizenship, now you can play either for Argentina or Peru, if you haven't played for neither of them. But lets say you've played for Argentina in the adult national team, you cannot play for Peru. Lets say now you've played in a youth national team for Argentina, then you can play for the adult Peruvian national team.

No. They are just less likley to get picked as they are not seen. Same thing happens in the UK.
