There are 8 actual planets, plus Pluto (which is not really a planet). There are dozens of round balls of rock in the solar system, many of them larget than Pluto, but they do not conform to the classic concept of planets, which were formed in a different stage in the evolution of the solar system.

9. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, in that order from the Sun.

Astronomers have argued for years whether Pluto really counts as a planet, because it's so small and because it has an extremely unusual orbit. They're currently trying to decide on a good definition about what is a planet. The one they're looking at - something that is globe-shaped and orbits a star, not another planet - would keep Pluto, and add three new planets to the members of the solar system: Ceres (between Mars and Jupiter), Charon (with Pluto, making a double planet) and Xena, way beyond Pluto.

Well there are is=The Sun,Mercury,Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune and Pluto. Don't forgot the moon it was explored in 1969 by Apollo 13. The planets have there own moons too. The stars too!
The milk way, light years, novas, dwarfs,Andromeda Galaxy and other galaxies. But the sun is not a planet it's a star. And all stars are burning balls of gas millions miles away they just look like that from far away. Make a wish on a shooting star. Also Aurora
Borealis also the northern and southern lights. New galaxies and stars also planets are being found all the time. They can be found by the Hubble space telescope,it's the biggest telescope in the world. Many objects are found in space like that. Meteors and other objects that are dangerous are found with telescopes and other scientific uses. Well I have to go now. And remember there are nine planets.

OKay, this week, scientist are reaching a decision if or not Pluto should be in the planet system, the result? 8 planets (If Pluto is not approved), or much more than 9 (if Pluto is approved, along with Xena, and the others, known as Kuiper Belt Objects)

As of this moment there are still nine. More than one set of talks is underway which would effect this number. There is a group who want to remove Pluto from the list. There is another group that wants to keep Pluto and add Pluto's moon Charon, 2003 UB313 aka Xena, and Ceres. Xena is even bigger than Pluto and almost as far from it as Pluto is from the Sun. Ceres is actually an asteroid, but my have enough gravity to qualify as a planet.

Nine planets right now, but if the International Astronomical Union votes to changes the rules about what constitutes a planet, we could have three more, Ceres (presently an asteroid, originally a planet), Charon (making Pluto-Charon a double planet) and Xena (presently UB313 and it has a moon called Gabrielle).

It all depends on your definition. I like the following:

An object that orbits a star and whose gravitational pull is greater than it's mass...it's round...is a Planet.

An object that orbits a star and whose gravitational pull is less than it's mass...it's any shape...is an Astroid.

An object that orbits a planet...is a Moon.

There are 9 Planets:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Nepturn, Uranus and Pluto.

there are 8 planets now because scientist got bored and reallized Pluto isn't considered a planet and to make it interesting they decided to fight about it so to old people there are 9 to the new age coming to school there is 8. you should know your own planets

From what I heard from the news this morning, there are now 12. Ceres after Earth, Charon after pluto which is actually a moon and the last is Xena. Cool....
