Not a stupid question! There are some REALLY stupid questons, but not knowing how to do something is NOT in that category.
You will connect the new computer to your internet connection almost exactly like your current 'old' computer is connected!
I will caution you to put surge supressor on the AC power line, but, if you are in Washington State or Florida, where there is a HUGE amount of lightning and electrical storm activity, and you should have an Uninterruptable Power Supply, powering your computer there!
Also, the modem cable can be protected by plugging the modem wire from the modem that used to go to the computer, into a surge protector, and, put another phone cable from the surge protection plug into the computer. I see, in the shops where I repair computers, many computers that are damaged by very high voltage coming in on the modem wires.
Before you unplug the old computer, make sure you have the telephone numbers for the service you use currently, as the new computer will need to dial out the firsttime with them! If you have any trouble with all this, you can email me, and I will try to help you.
What will you do with the 'old' computer? There are many needs for them, such as the Downs Syndrome Society for the lesser privileged ones in group homes, or, many missions, overseas, can use them.
If it is less than 5 years old, the Salvation Army can take it all as a donation, if fully operational and accompanied with all papers and CDroms.
Please delete all the hard drive in a secure way, and I can tell you how to do the 7 layer wipe that meets government standards for erasure...
I operate lots of computers that kids call 'old' but, I know how to get the old ones up to high speed! Some of mine are 10 years old, and run just fine! But, we have high speed Bright House cable for the on-line games!

No you dont need to start a new service, the servise isnt with your computer, well, its the software, but all you need to do is plug in the telephone jack and install the software and when you do that, just simply enter your phone # and stuff, and your all set. You dont need to start a new service or anything like that.

beattyb,
The only stupid question, is the one that's never asked, No you won't lose anything, you will have to install the software on the new one, but your account is web based, so Yahoo has a record of it, just install the software, the way you did on the old one. Good Luck

No, your ISP is independant of your pc. You can access your dialup account from any pc you want. YOur new one, your neighbors, from work...you just need to know the dialup number and your username and password. Your email address is the same.
And your children conned you into a new computer :)
