A number of times I've had the misfortune to sit next to someone on public transport so fat they overlap their seat and squash me into mine. I've paid a whole seat, not two-thirds of one.

I'm not being rude or hurtful. I'm stating a fact. I have a right to enjoy the space of my seat unimpeded, a seat that I have paid (often quite a lot) for. Whether fat people can help being fat is irrelevant. That's like saying smokers can't help being addicted to cigarettes, therefore I should be understanding when they light up next to me and I breathe in their poisonous fumes. If anything, it's the overweight who are being selfish.

I propose some kind of automated ***-measurer at the check in desk, rather like the scales used to weigh baggage. Anything over a certain size is charged excess.

Very difficult question. Maybe at peak times.

And people wonder why there are so many kids in this world today with eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, bullies like you make them fear they won't fit into society so they ruin their bodies and life's just to be part of the in crowd, your such an obnoxious person and very, very rude, for the record FAT people do not stink or smell, sit on their backsides all day eating or pretend they have a medical condition to get away with been FAT, if you are so offended by FAT people then go sit elsewhere and leave the FAT people to the repulsive life you seem to think they lead, you just carry on through the rest of your life been an ignoramus and bigot, god forbid you ever have a health condition that makes you overweight, you'd be the first to whinge then.

On public transport you don't pay for a seat, you pay for the transport!!!!!.

And yes I am obese and no I'm not obese because I eat too much I am obese due to medication for an illness I have. Why should I be punished by having to pay twice for something that its not my fault in the first place.

I agree and some US airlines are now doing this. If the flight goes full they pay, if they end up with free seats they refund the money.

I hate sitting next to fat people on a flight, they usually stink. Also they jab me in the ribs all flight when they are eating (which is most of the time from what I have seen).

There seems to be a theme here.

Skinnies agree and complain about the fatties sweating all over them.
Fatties say no and scream discrimination, before claiming their problem is medical (technically your mouth being bigger than your anus *is* a medical problem, after all).

Possibly the skinnies are just bitter because they don't get to sit and eat a bucket of cookie dough ice cream and 3 doughnuts for breakfast.

More to the point; a number of times an obese person has had the misfortune to sit next to you.

Perhaps, yes.

Sorry to bring the hammer down on obese people, but really, if you're squashing the person next to you, that's a problem that needs fixing.

Hello,
how should that work? If you buy a ticket, the seller first check your measures? Difficulty.

yes, especially on long flights. air travel is already obscenely expensive. we shouldnt have to put up with some lummox spilling over their seat into ours. unless airlines would provide oversized seats for the fat they should be made to pay for two.
