Onto the question, I think that the currently accepted theory is that you can't get to the edge of space because space is infinite. Space only seems finite because the universe has existed for a finite period of time. Thus, scientists say that they can see the edge of the universe, but that is only because we cannot see anything that is emitting light that hasn't arrived on our planet yet. Basically, you could make the argument that every year the universe gets one light-year larger because we can see things that are one light-year farther than the limit of what we could see previously.
