I have some really deep, really bad looking old scars. But, one that I've had for ...17 years on the back of my hand is barely noticable anymore, it has faded to be almost completely blended. Even though all of the skin was ripped out nearly to the bone, about a quarter size spot.

Another scar I had was nearly to the bone, a knife cut, almost halfway around my forearm. It did fade over 6 years time, but was still quite noticable. I covered it up with a tattoo. It looks great now ;)

If it's an old scar it's very difficult to get rid of with over the counter stuff it at all. If you are determined to get rid of it, your best option would be laser surgery from a certified dermatologist.
