My right thumbnail has a vertical ridge in the middle of it, and as it grows out, it splits. There is no discoloration. What causes this? My nine other fingernails are fine.

My thunbnail doesn't hurt me at all, unless i snag it on something before I can trim it. And you know what that feels like.

Superglue it together! More seriously - it probably indicates a lack of calcium in your diet. Perhaps you need to drink more milk. I am not a doctor - the problem bothers you - see professional help.

I believe the ridge was caused by previous damage to your finger. Try super gluing your nail where it splits. It may help and will not be harmful to you.
