Of the Roald Dahl books that I read to my five childen, my favorite is still Charlier and the Chocolate Factory; in fact, of all the books I read to them, it is one of my favorites, right up there with E. Nesbit, Lloyd Alexander, Carol Kendall, Mary Norton, and others. (As good as both Charlie movies were, neither lived up to the book. Neither did Dahl's own Charlie and the Glass Elevator.) Of course each time we gathered to read a chapter in the Chocolate Factory, we all had to have a chocolate brownie and part of a Hershey bar.
Our children also liked Fantastic Mr. Fox; in fact, it was one son's favorite. We have a thing for foxes.
But in the long run, from a literary point of view, James and the Gaint Peach may actually be the best. It is a picaresque novel for children with James and his fascinating friends, Old Green Grasshopper, Centipede, Earthworth, Silkworm, and Miss Spider, eccentrics all. They escape Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker in the Giant Peach and make their way to NYC.
In all his books, he captures naughty, mouthy characters that children find amusing and realistic, but he always balances them with a kind of innocent idealism.

I love Roald Dahl. His ideas are original and unique. I enjoyed The BFG, The Magic Finger, The Witches, and Matilda very much. My favorite would probably be Matilda. I also enjoyed the movie. I am fascinated by Roald Dahl's ideas and writing. I think he is the greatest children's books writer.

BFG, by far. I read that book about a hundred times as a kid.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was the absolute most magical movie, though. I remember trying to convince my mom that I needed to have lickable wallpaper. She tried to explain that it wasn't real, but I couldn't be convinced for the longest time.

Matilda for me too. I think Roald Dahl writes what it's like to be a kid better than just about anybody.
