Larry Johnson and LaDainian Tomlinson are my top two currently playing running backs. If I had to pick just one as the best, I'd say LT may be better. LT has been good for a longer period of time than Larry Johnson, who really had a great year last year, but only last year. In other words, LT has multiple great years back to back, Johnson only one great year.

The best pure running back in the nfl in my onpinon is clinton portis he is a versitile running back. while i will say he does not have great recieving stats remember he is a running back not a wide out.he averagas in his career 4.7 yards a carry which is better than LT and Alexander. He has had his share of bad seasons but who hasnt.now back to the only thing any one can argue he isnt a double threat cuz he cant catch. I say its not that he cant catch its he dosnt need to like LT, the chargers have no great wide outs only Gates but if he is doubled who is left LT. Portis has solid recieving stats not LT stats but enough to matter remember again he is there to run the ball not catch. so i say Portis he is quick agile can break tackles and he can pound it in for a td when needid.

Clinton Portis, LT, LJ, S Alexander r all great Rb in the league but i will have to see what this years group of rookies will do i think all will have a different way of looking at this question say around November or so. but for last year i like Clinton portis because of his stats at the end of the season when wash won 5 straight games.

Are you asking who is the best running back EVER or who is the best current running back?
The best ever in my opinion was Walter Payton. Sweetness was a thing to behold on the field.
Currently---hmmmm--maybe Shaun Alexander or Ladanian Tomlinnson. They both are great. But then so is Tiki Barber. Hard to call actually.

I have to go with Tiki Barber. Although Shawn Alexander had more rushing yards, theres no better playmaker or goto guy than Tiki. He is so valuable to the Giants, he was 2nd on the team with receptions last year, and had a huge amount of combined yardage from scrimmage. You just cant beat him.

Currently...without a doubt LaDanian Tomlinson. He's super fast, agile, and super tallented. The guy is a great option in the passing game, just like Marshal Faulk, and when he gets the ball, you better get him quick, when he's full speed, you wont get him so easily. This guy is definately a future hall-of-famer if he keeps this up...he is something special.
BTW...I'm not a Chargers fan...I just know tallent.
