Millipedes do have a lot of legs, but they never reach a thousand as the name might suggest. Some species may have up to a 130 pairs and that means they have no less than 260 legs! Having so many legs means that you have to walk carefully in order not to trip over your own feet. The reason millipedes are slow walkers is that each body segment has two pairs of legs that do not move simultaneously. Just try to imagine how it works and you'll know why it's impossible to run quickly in that way.

The greatest number of legs yet found on a millipede is about 600. They DO NOT have a thousand legs.

Talking of millipedes have you heard the one about the guy who goes into the pet shop and asks the owner if he has any unusual pets? Well the shop owner said why not have a millipede, they make lovely pets. So the guy buys one and takes it home in a matchbox and decides to call it "HARRY". He puts it on top of the television then sits down to relax.
5 mins after he says "Hey Harry, do you fancy going out for a walk?" No response from the millipede, so he repeats his question, "Hey Harry, do you fancy going out for a walk?" He waits a couple of minutes and then gets up goes over to the television and shouts "HEY, HARRY I JUST ASKED YOU TWICE, DO YOU FANCY GOING OUT FOR A WALK?" Next minute the matchbox opens and Harry sticks his head out and says "I heard you the first time I was just putting my shoes on".

"Milli" (Lat.) means thousand, and "pede" comes from "ped", meaning foot.

There are no millipedes with a thousand feet, however, though some kinds come close, with over 700. Commonly, they have 100-200 or so.
