A dictionary is a book
You use it to tell you the meaning of words
for example, look up the word 'dictionary' (the words are all in alphabetical order - if you are not sure what alphabetical order is, why don't you post another question on yahoo answers,). Next to the word dictionary it will tell you it's a book that gives meanings of words.
Then you can have language dictionaries. Suppose you had an English-French dictionary and you wanted to know how to say 'thank you' in French. Go to the English into French half of the dictionary, find 'thank you' and it will tell you 'merci'.
If you came across a French word and you wanted to know what it meant in English, you go to the French into English half of the dictionary, look up the word and it will tell you what that word is in English. Suppose you wanted to know what fromage meant in English, the dictionary will tell you it means cheese.

A dictionary is an anthology of words. It tells you how to spell them, what the meanings are, their tenses (past, present, future), and gives examples of how they are used in a sentence.
A dictionary is alphabetical, meaning it is in a-b-c order. Obviously, a is in the front and z is in the back. So if you were going to have to look up, *monkey*, you would look in the middle, because m is the in middle. Hope it helped!
