I've been getting pain around my ovaries off and on for the past year. It's not ovulation pain, it happens probably once a week or so, and it can last anything from minutes to a full day. It's a sort of aching pain, usually on the right side, occasionally on the left as well. When I insert tampons it often causes an intensely sharp severe pain on the right side - not every time, I'd say about 50% of the time.
I'm not sexually active and never have been. I'm on Dianette (oral contraceptive pill) for irregular periods (I'd have them every few months, sometimes up to 6 months apart). I don't want to go to the doctor because I know they'll want to do an internal examination and I really don't want that.
So anyone who's had ovarian cysts - what kind of pain do you get with them? Or does anyone have any other ideas as to what this pain sounds like?

whatever it is you definatly need to go to have it checked,
You are describing symptoms that could mean you have PCOS
or Polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Basically meaning "many" cysts.
i have this condition and also too have very sharp pains that last days. sometimes more and wearing tampons are excruciating!
Im speaking from experiance whan i say that its not nice to have any sort of check up involving your most intimate parts but please gather up your courage and go.
you dont say how old you are? maybe your mum or a friend can go with you, to diagnose PCOS they usually do a quick internal examination and a blood test, the amount of hormones in your blood will give a good indicator wheter or not you have it, your Ob/Gyne may also want to do an ultrasound to check how many cysts you have and how large they are.
some fo the following symptoms happen if you have PCOS
high blood sugar resulting in cravings for sugery foods and carbs.
Excess hair, ie.. top lip, chin, chest, back, etc, it depends on the severity of the condition as to how much and where if any.
Weight gain that is extreamly hard to shift.
Water retention
Really bad PMS
Acne
Disturbed periods or lack of them altogether.
these are just some of the signs to show that PCOS may be a possibility, ther are many many others.
There are lots of things that can be done to help the pains and the symptoms so talk to a doctor or nurse, but please dont be embarresed as many woman have problems like yours and the doctors have seen them all.
There is help, you just have to be brave enough to ask for it.
On the other hand, it may be nothing, or indeed it may be somthing more serious, either way its essential to get it checked out before it gets any worse.
Be Brave!

I got my first ovarian cyst two years ago, and I ignored the noticable pain for about two weeks. One day I was riding my motorcycle and had to stop at a gas station and call my brother to come and pick up my bike because I could not get up off the ground because of the sharp, knife like pain, down by my ovary. My parents rushed me to E.R and at the time I had never had sex and never used tampons. They had to put a cathader in me and perform an ultrasound. Finally they discovered I have an cyst on my right ovary. Every year I have to get an ultrasound done to make sure it doesn't grow or burst. But at the size it is right now, there is nothing they can do. Cysts can come and go, so..pretty much you should go to the doctor when it is there and see what they have to say. That's the only way you can be 100% sure.

I always had sharp pains in my ovaries... those kinds of pains that just stop you mid-sentence. It never happened when I inserted a tampon or had sex, but I could usually expect it about 2 weeks before the start of a period. My doctor told me that sometimes your ovaries are just extra sensitive to the increases in hormone production, so they can ache or it can feel like you're being stabbed by a hot poker.
Take it from me, I avoided the dreaded pap until age 26 when I was pregnant with my first child. The test takes 2 seconds, and if you have a female doctor they totally get why you're uncomfortable and try to put you at ease. Go have the test. If there are cysts, it could lead to ovarian cancer later in life, and that is about 80% fatal. Get it checked while you can still do something about it.

I had ovarian cyst that burst and I lost a tube and an ovary. I was in ICU for 2 weeks and in hospital for another month. I had pain and thought is a period pain but then pain was there. No pain killers helped. I went to A & E and was admitted. They thought I was pregenant possible epotic.
I wasn't on the pill but I was sexuality active. The doctor told my case is rare, but I have heard similar stories. If you have pain get checked out.
Good luck. Sorry to scare you. Contact me any time.

I've had ovarian cysts and the pain you describe sounds similar to the pain I experienced. I suggest you get checked out by a doctor.

I would say that yes you have an ovarian cyst. Get an ultrasound during the pain as it is growing or when the cyst bursts there will be no way to tell.

I got the diagnosis for an ovarian cyst from a ultrasound which was non invasive.
I hope you do go and see your doctor it would put your mind at rest,
I think this needs a hands on approach and unfortunately none of us here can do that.

You should go to the doctor. It might be Polycystic Ovarian syndrome or something else. A pap smear(internal exam) is not that bad as people think it is...it doesn't even take that long.

Uterine fibroids are usually not dangerous, but can cause immense discomfort and lead to complications like anemia from heavy blood loss. In rare cases, they may cause complications that affect pregnancy.
In cases where there are no symptoms, treatment may not be necessary. However, proper diagnosis and treatment may be required if your symptoms are severe or causing complications. Along with conventional treatment, you can try some natural home remedies. Read here https://tr.im/4Aspu
