Morph's friend was Chas, and I've had the privelige of holding Morph in my hand and playing with him courtesy of Peter Lord, the animator behind Morph, coming to give a talk at my school which was located the opposite side of the valley to Peter's studio. It was about 1988, and they'd just shot the Peter Gabriel 'sledgehammer' video, and the cuprinol advert. Aardman at that time still had studios in Clifton, Bristol rather than Bradley Stoke and Peter Lord let slip that at any given moment in time there were typically several hundred models of Morph in existence whilst filming as the clay would dry out so quickly under the cameras that they would simply reach for the next one and move on.
For me, the most amazing part of the talk was when right in front of me, Peter Lord took a lump of the clay (which is a special mixture to Aardman's own formula) and made a Morph character with his hands and put him straight into mine. It was like a magical experience to see a block of clay turned into one of the most recognizeable TV characters from my childhood. I still remember the talk almost two decades later as it was so memorable watching all the animated films that Peter Lord had done up to that point. The guys at Pixar hadn't come together at that time, and the notion of using sound from real life with animated clay figures was an Aardman innovation that would travel the world and reshape cinema. Eat your heart out Shrek, you owe it all to Aardman's innovations, years prior to the invention of CGI. I was so pleased recently when both Peter Lord and Nick Park received New Years Honours - the guys definitely deserved them for the work they've done in Aardman Animations and for Nick Park bringing the world Wallace and Grommit out of their humble origins in a short film created as a student project.

He was called Chas.
He was a Clone of Morph, but was a bit nasty.
The show was called "Take Hart", and was presented by Tony Hart.
I think Morph first appeared on "Vision On", but I'm not sure.

I don't know about the little dude but the show was Smart, presented by Mark Speight, Kirsten O'brien and Bizzie Lizzie. Before Bizzie Lizzie it was Jay someone but i don't know what happened to him. There is also a show called Smarteenies for younger viewer.
Happy Morphing!

Chaz - Though unfortunatly he turned to drink soon after the show ended. Personally I think that he was unable to handle the success that Morph attained and this, combined with his inability to find work due to typecasting, he sought solace in the bottle. He died in 1987 the poor little wretch. The show was called 'Take Hart' - I used to love it.
