Yes, I've had Compaq (not recommended) HP (ok) and Toshiba (highly recommended). Some may say HP and Compaq are the same company, and that's true. But, one could argue that Lexus and Toyota are the same company, but Lexus brand has much higher quality than Toyota. Point is, each company has a product line that is designed for a certain budget. HP-branded laptops are far superior to the Compaq-branded models. ASk anyone in the computer industry. Toshiba is extremely reliable, and usually fairly cutting edge, so I'd go with Toshiba.

Ive got a Dell 4150. Ive put it through hell accidently dropping several times. Some plastic has cracked but no real damages. I wouldnt suggest getting a Dell until I put something threw my hell. Check the Dell site and look at anything thats a midlevel computer (Inspirion E1505 is good with either the Solo or Duo Core they start at $700). I know someone who has one and its sweet and quick. Dell has really good service support and easy to deal with if problems come up and laptop has to be sent off.

A level up would be to check out Alienware laptops. They are better than the XPS line that Dell offers. Dell just recently bought Alienware cause of their superiority with gamer line computers.

Determine what your gona use the laptop for and chose parts that will best fit your needs that you want to do. Also laptops cant be upgraded to much so put as much upgrades into the laptop as you can. Upgrade video, dvd burner if its available and fits the budget once you get it all you can upgrade is add more memory, a battery, and a external hard drive for extra storage space....Thats it...

Check out all different manufactures and research the net. Most of the companies are good. Of course your gona get I hate this and I love this...They all got highs and lows. Just take alittle time to look.

Good luck

I own several laptops, including Dell, HP, IBM, Compaq and Apple.

If you're looking to stay WinTel in the $1K range, I would concentrate on Dell, HP and Lenovo. Each have units with attractive feature sets at that price range. As always, it will become a balance between selecting features vs. cost.

I suggest you always get a 2- or 3-year on-site service agreement, even if you have to pay for it. Things happen to laptops, if you use and travel with one enough, eventually something will break (no matter what brand you choose). You don't want to have to send it in to them for repair - ever.

Finally, if you're interested in going Mac, I've adored both the iBook and PowerBook laptops I've owned and used. But they're pricey for the feature set, and if you want to run both OSX and XP / Vista on them, just the additional software required will increase the total price over $1K.

Hope this helps some.

HP and Compaq are the same company, so they should be similar in quality (at the same price).

I have a Toshiba Satellite, and the harddive cr@pped out. Otherwise I'm happy with it.

We use HP nx6325s at work and they're pretty good. Come with a lot of HP shite installed so need a clean XP install but otherwise they're better than the Dells I've used.

I am very pleased with my Toshiba M45. Got it last Christmas, it is a bit heavy to lugging around lots but manageable. It has lots of horsepower and seems to be reliable.

Avoid Dell. Toshiba is recommended by folks who know something about computers. Mine has been good for four years even though it is out of style now.
