I would suggest using different terminology that you both can agree on.

I think it means turning the AC up to a higher level, making the air cooler.

Well...I would say YOU'RE correct, turning up the air IS making it cooler, and I think most would agree with us. I guess some people think differently, though.

Because saying 'turn up the air,' is like saying 'turn up the air conditioner,' except not. Tell that to your roommate, lol.

Wow. I've been reading the word 'turn,' so much that it's starting to sound funny o_o''

Reading other people's answers, I'm starting to think it really depends on where you're from or who broguht you up, lol. I guess you guys are both right. Maybe you should just say something that's all together different.

When I say, "Turn up the air," I mean turn the air conditioning higher therefore making the temperature cooler!

The phrase is slang for increasing the power to the air conditioning machine. Since the function of the machine is to drive the temperature down, it basically translates to "making it cooler."

Your friend is being overly literal in this case. I suspect he/she will probably also have problems with the phrase "the alarm going off."

I would think it would make it warmer, most people say it to make it warmer. They're talking about turning up the temperature, if the temp is raised the air won't come on as much and will make the room warmer.

Make it Cooler

Cooler. It means, "Turn up the AC," which means, "Turn down the thermostat." - i.e., turning the thermostat down to a lower temperature makes the AC turn on. We say, "Turn up the air," because saying, "Turn up the amount of cold air," sounds silly. Of course, we could just say, "Turn on the AC."
