good first half

My comment is KEEP THE MATCH IN PERSPECTIVE. Yes, it was a very promising result, we tonked the European Champions. But it was a game with a new manager, and that always brings about a positive change. The players had points to prove, to him and to themselves.

Next part, the epitaph of the Sven era still prevails: first half good, second half not so good. They have to do something about this. Granted, they were four goals to the good at half time, but we don't want to see a return to 1-0 up at half time and playing well; then the team putting in a dosy, complacent showing in the second half and letting the opposition back into the game.

Thirdly, all sections of the media have been positive to Steve McClaren this week. It's his honeymoon period and he can't put a foot wrong. His selections are great, he has said all the right things, they are treating friendlies well, they passed well and played like a team again. However, all it takes is a couple of soperific wins and they will be stabbing him in the back and unearthing all the negatives.

Our next few games against the likes of Andorra and Macedonia aren't all that demanding either (but still require a proper mental approach). McClaren-Venables' first 'proper' test could be the November friendly against Holland.

So it was a very good start, and some very positive decisions have been made; but we must keep the result in context. A good start needs to be built on, not left to disguise aspects of the national team which require addressing.

Congratulations England. Great first half of football. Greece presented some problems in a much improved second half with some consistent attack, but you guys held up. It surely will boost the confidence of the players and of course the fans. I think Aaron Lennon is a really promising talent. Shame he didn't get a little more game time. Seeing as it was not on here in Australia until the wee hours, I was hoping I wasn't disappointed, and I wasn't. Good Luck to you in the rebuilding of the team. I hope some success follows. Well done.

Progressively good first half. Second half was solid but I think Greece woke up as well and looked more threatening.

Kirkland was good in goal when called upon. Wished we could have seen more from Aaron Lennon. I think Hargreves deserved man of the match but I think Stuart Downing was very good, too.

All in all, a great start for our Steve, Terry and captain John.

Oh, and Theo Walcott scored! Last night for England Under 21's. Maybe Sven wasn't wrong about him!

England need to win a World Cup Quarter Final 4-0. Wins in friendlies are nice but there is still only one star of the shirt for one World Cup win.

England was always going to win, that always seems to happen with a new manager. Players raise their game a bit to catch the new managers eye. Wait and see what happens during the European Championship qualifying matches. At least with Sven incharge, England always managed to qualify. I hope its not going to be a return to the bad old days of last gasp qualification. There were some promising signs tonight, I think it was a 7 out of 10.

The first half was good for England, bad for Greece. They were virtually asleep during the first half.Paul Robinson barely had anything to do.But it was good to see Greece come alive in the second half but it would've been more exciting if England scored more goals in that half!I agree with Andygurl on Aaron Lennon,he's should've played more. He's one of my favourite promising footballers!

Enjoy it while it lasts my friend.................
come next Euro-Champs tears will again flow and another England manager will bite the dust.
Coach or not the opposition were shocking, a team of girl guides could have defended better.
Peter Crouch is not a footballer, he travels around with the team like a court jester used to with royalty in days of old....
and again the girl guides could have scored the goals he scored.
Lets keep our feet on the ground!
