You can try wrapping a thin layer of tissue over some charcoal and place it on the affected portion of the carpet, and leave it there for about a day or 2.

Charcoal is good for absorbing bad odor.

Approach. It's the best. No harsh chemicals and just pour it on the area of the carpet you need to fix and it'll go away forever. Gets right down into the padding and will completely eliminate the odor there. It's awesome stuff. You can get it online at www.approachit.net

I used it on my carpets when I was housebreaking my dog. Worked like a charm. :)

Good luck!

I have found two products that are non-toxic and effective:

Zero Odor

T-2

Make certain that your carpet and pad are completely dry. Elevate the material and run lots of air around it via fans. Otherwise, you will have a big mold problem to contend with.

Vinegar works great on everything. Dilute a little in water and spritz it on. Go stronger if you're going to scrub it afterwords (the vinegar smell hangs around for a day or two unless you do that).

I haven't met anything (including some very stinky shoes, once) vinegar couldn't make smell nice! :)

The under-padding is wet and the odor is "bacteria". It will remain as long as the pad remains. Left too long, the carpet backing will delaminate.

Sprinkle some type of kitty litter on it, let it sit overnight, then sweep up excess. Repeat as needed. If it is saturated, you are better off hiring a professional to clean it up.

Have you tried Febreeze? Or leave a bowl of milk near it. Milk is great at getting rid of odours.
