a guinea pig can be left alone if given a cage big enough to explore in and filled with things to do. Most commericially sold cages for guinea pigs are not of adequate size for a full grown guinea pig, no matter what the pet store or the box says.
They are also NOT nocturnal as one person here said, but if you are not home during the daytime for long periods of time the pig will be lonely and bored.
I would make sure you purchase a male guinea pig from the store as well, because most petstores don't have a clue as to how to seperate sexes and if you get a female, you won't have to worry about yours being alone for very long because she will most likely be pregnant.
Try going to http://www.Petfinder.com and looking for guinea pigs to be adopted in your area. There are hundreds given up for adoption all the time because they prove more trouble than some people are willing to spend after purchasing one on an impulse. The rescue agencies will give you good advice on how to raise a happy healthy one as well.
Good luck

They wil be happier with a cage mate but do not get ones that are oppisite sex cause they will have babies my brother knows all about guinea pigs and he has 2 and they are very happy together but males may fight with each other and females rarely fight most likey never. And for a feeding tip- they LOVE celery fed to them by hand and it makes them used to being around youbut only like half of a celery stick should be fed to them.

guinea pigs CAN survive alone but just remember that they do not sleep the same time as you do so they are alone all night long. imagine how bored you would get if you were left alone for over ten hours a day with just a toy, a food dish and a water bottle.

they're fine when they're alone as long as you don't neglect them. It's nice if you can put two together when they're little, though. My class guinea pig had babies when I was younger and I got to keep two of them. They were the best of friends, but the one who outlived the other one was sad when his brother died : (

Sure! Just give him enough attention from you. And - a couple of toys (that you can purchase from the local pet store). The little "piggie" should be just fine!

Yes, as long as you give them plenty of attention and affection.
