It seems that I sigh a lot without even realizing it. Many people think that I am impatient with them or upset, but I don't really have control over it. I don't even know that I am doing it. I only found out when a good friend asked me about why I sigh so much

Low oxygen levels, your normal respiratory cycle must be very shallow. Try consciously taking several deep breaths every hour, see if that doesn't help the sighing.

Sighs.. like yawns.. are the body's way of expelling 'bad air' from the lungs. When you are breathing at a slow rate because you are relaxed, the air movement in your lungs is very small. THerefore not all the air is exchanged. Remember you take in a combination of gases that includes oxygen and then your body absorbs what oxygen it needs and expells the carbon dioxide it doesn't want. When you and breath out you are expelling all the gases that your body doesn't want. However, your lungs never completely empty and therefore always have a bit of left over air in them. A sigh or a yawn is the bodys way of either taking in a big set of air (yawn) and blowing it all out to clear them or breathing out more than it normally does in the manner of a sigh.

It could be that your not expelling the air in the right porportion to 'make your lungs happy' and therefore the sighing mechanism is doing it for you. This could be caused by many things such as being overweight, ashma, allergies, lung problems or.. and most likely... it's just a natural action of your body and it's noticible because it's a bit different for others.

If you are out of shape and don't exersize much, try increasing the amount you exercise as this will strengthen you lungs. Also, swimming (or at least standing in chest deep water) is a great exersize for lungs.

Hope this helps and good luck.

You know.. I much have yawn and sighed six times while I type this.. funny how that works.

low oxygen levels to the brain, so your brain automatically tells your lungs to breath whether you like it or not.
