I am enrolled in an independent study class in high school and was wondering what I could do for a project. This will be a year long process and will be presented in front of a panel of judges. I need an idea/project to do that is creative and original-something that hasn't been done before. Doesn't matter in what field of study. Thanks.

Investigate your local history.

You can spend a lot of time doing old-fashioned research--books and interviews!

Chances are not many other students have thought about that.

Your easiest to coordinate projects will be research related, but the more fun stuff will involve building something. I'm in college and have been considering taking an independent study. My two ideas are: an in depth study of ancient American art (such as the Azetcs or the Mayans) or jewelry applications of the machine lathe.
Find something you're interested in that you want to know more about.

Hmm...what are your interests (personal and study-related)?

I'm into computers, if I were in your shoes, maybe I'd consider working on your school's web site. Learn how to code or whatever, and implement some changes/ideas that you come up with. It depends on the state of your school's website/technology of course. You could build an alumni site, student profiles, etc. The possibilites are endless. I'm sure any tech-related teacher with the relevant skills would be more than happy to assist you with it.

Is there anything in particular you are interested in? Drama/arts? English? History?

From there, you could narrow down your choices and make it enjoyable. Word of advice: dont consider it a blow off course ... work hard and thank the teacher/faculty person who sponsors you or helps you out
