In reality, many more numbers besides 555 are excluded as prefixes by the telephone company (911, 411, and anything beginning with a 0 for example), but let's pretend that only 555 is excluded. After a 3-digit prefix, there are 4 digits that can be anything from 0 to 9. That means 10000 phonenumbers per prefix. There are 10000000 phonenumbers possible in total, so subtracting the 10000 phonenumbers with a "555" prefix leaves 9990000. ***Late-breaking news: Got a call from a telemarketer today. Its telephone # had a "000" prefix, after the area code. Go figure!
