First on my list is Casablanca. Bogart and crew worked beautifully. I've got the Turner colorized, which was a fair piece of work, but worth it (there's so much color reference, "I remember it all, you wore blue....").
Another classic, is The General, a silent and black/white Civil War flick with authentic props and a fantasticly excellent performance by Buster Keaton, who I think was a far better actor than Charlie Chaplan.
American Western, "The Magnificent Seven" was a gem of wonderfully-played down-on-their-luck characters doing something big and beautiful just because it needed doing. Not only is it an inspiring retelling of the Japanese Seven Samauri, but the music and scenery was majestic. The Russian actor that played the old Mexican man was so stirring in his concluding remarks at the end, the words still grab me today.
There are movies that jar me, yet I mention because everyone needs to see them, even if only once. That includes Schindler's List and The Passion of the Christ. A lesser degree, though honorable mention needs to go to Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia.
But one that grips me and moves me, though for far less great and grand themes is An Affair to Remember, I never can get through that one without crying. One that comforts me is The Quiet Man, where John Wayne tries to find a beautiful and peaceful life in a beautiful and peaceful place, but has to fight for despite his best intentions.
Yet, any movie with Audrey Hepburn or Alec Guiness in it will make me check my schedule to see if I have time. Well, and any of the Star Wars movies, unless the grand old sci/fi classics like Forbidden Planet or The Day the Earth Stood Still or 2001 A Space Odessy are on, I've got to see those at least once every year or two.
