there is a horse farm near our house and i notice they had a couple of their horses faces covered with what looked like a padded 'mask' for lack of a better word, it covered the eyes completely. Is this due to an injury or disease? Just wondering...

As you can see from the pictures at the link below, these are all different styles of fly masks. The flies around the poor horses are very nasty -- they bite as well as try to lay eggs, etc. The eyes are especially sensitive, and the horses tail, which normally is what it uses to whip away the flies, will only hurt the eyes. So we humans have come along and made these to protect the poor things. Some are "blinders", some are see-through. There are even fly boots, for sensitive ankles!! LOL!!

What you saw were probably fly masks. Sometimes thay are circles placed over the horses eyes to keep flies out, and other times they cover from the forehead to just above the nostrils.

Those padded face masks are used to protect the horses eyes from flies that land on them. Horses also have to wear sunscreen on the pink skin on their noses. I bet you didn't know that.

it is called a fly mask. and the padding is just so it wont rub on there face. sometmes it is like sun glasses ( i dont know how else to put that lol ) to shade there eyes from the sun. and some owners put it on if they have a barb wire fence or sharp fence to protect there eyes. it doesnt work that well in that case but o well.

Those are to keep the flies out of their eyes. Flies like to lay eggs in warm moist places like the eyeballs of horses.

no, i don't think they're for flies- instead, they're so that the horse will only look at what's in front of it since horse's eyes are placed on the sides of their heads, unlike humans
