I think that if it is already added you shouldn't have to do anymore.

YES! I used to serve and I never thought 15% was enough. Those servers make like 2.00 an hour, why not throw in a couple extra bucks. It means so much to them, and people remember. If you frequent that restaurant often and tip well, servers will fight over you and you will be guaranteed 5star***** service. It may take like 5 times for them to start to remember you but my fiancee and I are known as good tippers at Steak-n-Shake and places like Olive Garden. I recommend always tipping 20%, and a $4 minimum. Some Mexican restaurants are cheaper priced, but the servers still depend on those tips. Every server should get atleast $4 per 2 top. And if you eat solo leave atleast $3.

you are always allowed to tip extra. but do so only if your server warrants it....exceptional service, good personality, etc. i had a problem with a restaurant adding a 15% tip to my bill (which i'm not sure is even legal, i mean, i'm not sure i HAVE to pay it) for just my family of 4. I always tip, even if it's a small tip that reflects poor service. I could see no reason for adding it to my family's bill. because i was on vacation, and having a great time with my little soldier girl, who i had not seen in several months (my daughter) i probably would have tipped more, but to me this says, hey, this is what i think the service was worth. and just in case one questions this, let me say i've been the hospitality industry most of my adult life (more than 17 years)

I will usually leave if I find out I have to tip even if the service is lousy. I have never liked this policy in restaurants. A gratuity is just that, a "Thank You" to the server for being attentive, polite, and helpful. I work in the service industry, and I've noticed that the waiters/waitresses that complain the most about being under-tipped are generally the least interested in providing an enjoyable dining experience.
And to those of you who say that waitstaff depend on their tips, and need that extra income just to get by, that's B.S. they (commonly) spend them on drugs and alcohol, and nearly never pay taxes on them.
Added: Chicky, I intended no disrespect to you or anyone who is trying to make an honest living, I am speaking from personal experience, what I have seen with my own eyes.
btw, I'm actually the cook, not the dishwasher. you can't know how many times the waiter/waitress has given me an incorrect order which I've had to re-make, only to hear them complain about that same table not tipping well.
I'm sorry if I offend you, or anyone else

First of all, I usually tip 20 % if the party is over 6 persons
If the tip is already added, I will tip extra if the service was extraordinary.

Depends on the service. If they were really good, I would go as far as 20%. Thats my usual tipping amount. I used to be a server, so I know what it's like on the other side. 15% is set by the resturaunt and it usually makes people think thats all that should be given... kind of stinks for a server busting thier butt.

If you have a particularly troublesome group, you should tip more. I think that you should give an extra couple bucks if you can just as a sign that you are not cheap so.... I went out when i was like 11 with my great uncle and he something like "aduliyamakaya" and the waiter handled him well. We tipped high.

No, I don't tip more. If the restaurant feels the need to add a tip to my check, too bad for my server because I never tip less than 15%...and thats with mediocre service!

Hey Scooby!
I happen to notice that the answers from men are mostly No! and the answers from women are mostly Yes!
To answer your question, Yes! They have to tip out their Bartender and Busser a percentage of sales and they are also taxed on a percentage of sales. So if they do better than average, YUP!

this is actually in responce to Raymond T's answer. My reply is "thank you" ...you say you will leave if you find out about auto. gratuity and i say thanks for not even coming in. You stated you work in the service industry and for what its worth your service as a dishwasher is appreciated however your opinion is narrow-minded. I've worked in restaurants for almost 10 yrs now.....as a second job to that of Investment banking, and i use that extra money to help fund my childrens' college education so that they may be something more then the dishwasher that you have settled to be.

Only if you want to. It is customary for restaurants to add gratuity for larger parties to ensure that the server is taken care of properly. If you think that the server has done an exceptional job and deserves more than 15% then you should feel free to express that, it is always appreciated.
