i have never heard of it before until today and it seems to be everywhere today? please could someone please help?

GMail http://www.gmail.com is an email service like Yahoo Mail or Hotmail provided by Google. It gives 2GB of storage and is a good email service. Check out more details at http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about.html
Currently, you can sign up either via a mobile phone or through an invitation from an existing user. If you want an invitation to sign up and use GMail then let me know, I can send you one.

It's google's mail system. It has more storage than yahoo and less spam but you need an invite to get in. Just search gmail invites and you can probably find one.
