people who take comfort in others misfortune are unhappy with their own life. they feel comfort in knowing that other people are just as misfortunate as themselves and that in some cases that people are worse off than them.

This question can be read two different ways actually
One way being that someone is made to feel better by helping others. Which is a good thing with good intent.
The other way deriving pleasure seeing someone else suffer for whatever personal reason. Obviously, not a good thing.

It makes you realise that your own problems could be worse, but if you take JOY in other peoples misfortune, then you are evil.

it makes some humans realize that their life isn't that bad! it's like a ego boost... A screwed up way if you ask me! but so is the 5 oclock news!
we need some leaders inplace of followers following followers cuz that gets ya no where!
and if that's how the parents were happy then it will just conitnue on!!!

Cos it makes them feel better about their own failings...humans compare themselves to others all of the TIME, if they didnt how would you know you were doing good?--U NEED A SCALE---
ThIS ISNT REALLY TRUE COS YOU CAN DO GOOD DEEDS ALL TIME AND FEEL GOOD, BUT ON THE OUTSIDE, NO ONE CAN TELL HOW WELL YOUR DOING, SO WHEN OTHERS MEASURE THEIR SUCCESS THEY ARE DOING SO IN A SOCIETY RAT RACE KIND OF WAY--- CAPITALIST, MATERIAL GAIN ETC.--how good you look, career u got, what car you got, marriage etc. So if u dont do well in these areas and u see others that dont, the scale that u measure yourself against drops and phew!! its easier for you in view of others think!!!!

It reminds you that you're not as bad off as others. Be grateful for what you do have. It's bad & sad to think that way, but then again... there are people who have come up from the worst situations.

first, it makes them feel comforted that they're not alone in their suffering and that others have bigger problems than you do. it makes you feel more thankful for what you have. it makes you realize that life for you is really pretty good compared to some other people. it's called being optimistic.

For some people it allows them to escape their own problems for a while, I don't think its an intentional thing really.

I think that knowing someone is in a worse boat than you kinda makes your life seem happier.
