Satellite can "potentially" be the fastest, but it wholely depends on the wind speeds, weather, and atmospheric conditions. Cable is almost always on, with few interuptions, and is the best choice for high speed, and also the best choice for setting up a wireless network (which is very easy these days). Dsl comes in next, dsl can be spotty and is controlled by your telephone's line quality, therefore, if your phone company is having problems, your internet is down. And we all know dialup is the equivalent of snail mail. Hope this helps :) Cable is now around 40$ and under, depending where you go, id definitely go for that.

For public use a cable modem is theoretically fastest but because you share the "line" with other users in the neighborhood it can become bogged down. But commercially available lines are T3 connections. Anything else is reserved for "backbone" usage.
