Woman have periods every month to cleanse their body. To have a baby they must line the uterus. It is lined with blood and tissue. This is called your menstrual cylcle. It lines so that if you decide to get pregnant then the egg will fertilise and you will have a baby. If you don't want to get pregnant then the lining will shed and that is a period, otherwise said menstruation. This happens to a woman as a way of life. Some girls want their 1st periods and others dread it. You can get a first period anytime from age 6-18. If you have not yet got it you should talk to a parent or trusted adult about preparing, you'll never no when it's going to come!
Periods are a way of showing your a woman, nothing to be worried or embarressed about. If you think something is wrong with you then I would talk to your doctor.
You can use sanitary products to absorbe your flow, such as menstrual cups, pads, tampons and pantiliners. They come in sizes like lightdays, regular, and super.
Pads- Attach to your underwear and and is sort of like a diaper.
Pantilers- for inbetween periods or very light periods.
Tampons- inserted into the vagina and absorb inside you. Can cause TSS(toxic shock syndrome).

According to my male cousin, because we deserve them. lol

Serious answer I got the info off the BBC bitsize KS3 revision site.

The menstrual cycle
Day one of the menstrual cycle is marked by the beginning of a period, also known as 'menstruation'. During menstruation, the thick uterus (womb) lining, which built up during the previous menstrual cycle, is released along with blood and mucus. The uterus contracts to force out the old lining.
This can also cause stomach cramps in some women. On average only 40ml of blood are lost during a period, but the amount can be five times more or five times less. Periods last around 5 days.

False starts
In many girls, the start of bleeding does not mean that sexual maturity has been reached. Often there will be no egg released for the first month. On the other hand, some girls will release eggs for several months before bleeding occurs.

PMS
Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, or PMS, is the name for some of the symptoms girls experience in the days leading up to a period. These include breast pain and water retention. A girl might also become irritable and tired, or suffer from nausea and headaches.
More pleasant perhaps is a craving for chocolate and stodgy food. As many as three quarters of women experience some form of PMS and it can be worse during teenage years as the menstrual cycle is becoming established.

Hope this helps you to understand it a bit better. :-)

My daughter is 12 and I let her go onto that website. I think you should ask your parents to explain it to you or a aunt. Or maybe the school nurse.

Well, the long and the short is like this. It is a bit like a biological spring-clean of the female reproductive system, but seeing as the body always has to be in a tip-top extra clean state always this has to happen every month. If a woman does not have a period, either she is too old to reproduce, or she is pregnant, in which circumstance all energies go on creating life, i.e. the baby. Not being to sure of how much you have been told/taught already it is probably best to leave it at that.

About once a month, a tiny egg leaves one of the ovaries — a process called ovulation — and travels down one of the fallopian tubes toward the uterus. In the days before ovulation, the hormone estrogen stimulates the uterus to build up its lining with extra blood and tissue, making the walls of the uterus thick and cushioned. This happens to prepare the uterus for pregnancy:

Hello, welcome to the world of the birds and the bees - shouldn't your parents taught you this already? Or shouldn't you have taught yourself?

Women have periods in order to be able to have children, menstruation is part of the menstrual cycle, this helps a woman's body prepare for the possibility of pregnancy each month - when conception does not occur the uterus lining that builds up to prepare for implantation of the fertalized egg is released and the cycle starts again to prepare the body for the possibility of pregnancy.

If you don't know then your too young to be on here.
We have an egg that can be fertilised (made into a baby). If the egg isn't fertilised (not made into a baby) then the body releases it, it comes out as blood in a period.

They have their periods because the egg was not fertilized by a sperm and since the egg is not fertilized it needs to be discharged out of the body.

because every female mammal has an egg that ruptures from an ovary that makes it possible to be fertilized when sperm is present. Hence, why women (and most female mammals) become exeedingly aroused during their ovulation time. Cheers!

The womb prepares to accept a fertilized ovum. When this doesn't happen the extra lining is not needed so it is discarded, just like you throw out food from the fridge that is not needed and has gone off.
