that you can't be smart AND beautiful or that if you are ugly you are probably a genius.
Why do certain people make assumptions on the way you look?

Frankly, I haven't the slightest idea!!

Lets take two people, both equally smart, one beautiful and
the other normal looking or ugly.

The beautiful person will probably get far more out of life
than the normal person will. He or she will certainly progress
more easily through work and relationships, etc.

There is *NOTHING* the normal person can do to change that.

Wouldn't that make you resentful?

So ... isn't it easier to assume that beautiful people don't
have something that you do have? That is, if they are stupid,
then maybe you have a chance.

By the way, statistically, even outside of the advertising,
modeling and theatrical businesses, better looking people
move ahead faster (get better jobs, better pay) than worse
looking people.

This means that you might be surpassed by someone who
is less talented than you but who looks better. Don't you
think that breeds resentment?

You'll get to the point where they only way you can make
life appear to be "fair" is to assume that good looking people
have nothing to offer other than beauty.

I think that there is a great deal of stereotypes in the media today and in the past. The smart girl/guy is always unattractive, but makes a good friend, while the hot girl/guy is a bit slow. We are instilled with these images and convince ourselves that this is reality. Many beautiful people I know use there looks to there advantage, along with been major brain trusts. And I'm sure there are dumb ugly people, but I just feel bad for them.

Well, that is what you call stereotyping. I do not think the majority does this, most people prefer to take people on their character. The people who stereotype have a tendency to voice their opinions and therefore it seems more prevalent. As to why People think that way, they may have their own self esteem problem, or have been taught to think that way. Simply put, it is a lack of an open mind. Don't every feel hurt by another person's inadequate behavior, and let them know what you think. Give them the opportunity for open mindedness.

They are going on stereotypes, which are based on the similar actions/characteristics of only a small population of the group being stereotyped.

But the small percentage doesn't speak for the whole.

And thus they are wrong.

First impression is everything, remember???

Its called a stereotype.. however, I tend to think that ugly people are not very bright either. Otherwise they would know how not to look so ugly.

These people are either too lazy or too stupid to discover the person behind the face. In either case, I just don't give them a second thought. (or a first one for that matter.)

It's called superficiality. Some people judge others on their looks. It's best to ignore them and move on.
