I am reading a very good book called "Status Anxiety". Where he explains that the origin of the disatisfaction and unhappiness ofmost of modern Western society men lies in the fact that status and material wealth are the main drives and motivation in today's industrial society, creating unhappinness and anxiety in those who don't make it, along with envie aqmong piers. Creating also the illusion that high status equals high personal worth, the more you make the more you're worth what do you think.

I love Alain DeBotton. _Status_Anxiety_ was an A-1 book.

To answer your question, I do not think status = self-worth. The majority of people in the modern Western world do, however.

Being human and non-Buddist, I occasionally desire material things (comfy shoes, jeans, whatev). But I truly value sharing, love, family, friends, laughter and leisure above all. Wish more people did, too.

people judge us by our appearance whether we like it or not.sometimes it matches the stereotype, sometimes it does not.we're prone to judging others and dislike it when others judge us.some are easily influenced by the media's brainwash of how materialistic things can bring happiness in terms of a better lifestyle, not necessarily emotional happiness though.happiness is only a temporary state of mind.someone with financial wealth doesn't necessarily mean that they're happier than the norm.some of us are easily fooled by illusions and think that attaining status/material wealth can relieve their anxiety.tim burton's movie, charlie & the chocolate factory is a great example of a false sense of happiness and how someone can be blinded by material wealth.charlie may be poor but in the end,he's happier than the cynical willy wonka, who has everything that the world seems to envy but he doesn't have the love of family.i think it's a self destructive mind game that'll eventually corrupt society.most people are driven by money.do people go to college because they genuinely want to learn for the sake of a better education or is that reward of getting a higher salary is mainly what motivates people?status creates superficial happiness, not necessarily real happiness, whatever 'happiness' means nowadays.ironically, out of all of the different occupations,i hear mostly about teachers complain about being under paid.do they really dedicate themselves to their career because they love teaching or they just want a bigger paycheck and love the 3 month vacations?hopefully, that's not their intention.

we're worth more than we think.

I am worth more than any gold and and precious metal since I am created in the immage of GOD. No material things will give me any higher status than GOD himself.
