I would have thought fuel system except you said it runs on, a sure sign that the ignition is too far advanced. You losten the bolt that holds down the distributor and turn it ever so slightly. If you hook a timing light up you can properly time the ignition. Should not cost much to go to a mechanic and have them check the timing and adjust it.

I would simply go through and clean or replace anything involving your fuel system, like replacing the plugs, the wires and the fuel filter. Also, run a tank of fresh gas through your car, with a bottle or two of HEET in the tank. This will clean out the crap in the line, plus scavenge any moisture that may be resting in there.

Is it a diesel, or a gas engine??

If its gas (most likely) your mixture is too lean. If it is fuel injection, replace your 02 (oxygen) sensor, it can create scenarios like this.
