Are the Replicants androids (robots made to look like humans), or are they actual organic life forms?

when batty 'dies' at the end its because his battery ran out as it were

well, that depends on your interpretation. They would seem to be partly organic if they felt like humans. Nut the robotics would make it-well, robotic.
The movie is filled areas open to interpretation. In one version, the audience is left wondering if Deckard is a replican, in the other, there is no way to infer such a thing.
I suggest reading the book, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" By P.K. Dick. it's the book that the movie is based on. It might clear up a few questions

The film depicts a dystopian Los Angeles in November 2019 in which genetically manufactured beings called replicants, physically identical to adult humans, are used for dangerous and degrading work in Earth's "off-world colonies.

Genetically created humans. They had no childhood so they set their life span to four years. They found after four years the replicants began to rebel having no stable emotional base like regular humans.

Harrison Ford's character is one. He doesnt know it.
