How can you be a mortician and a mother?

Question

I almost finished college for mortuary science then got preggy. I want to go back but the hours are so unpredictable I dont know how I will do it with a baby. You will probablly only know how to answer this if you are a mortician yourself because it is unlike other jobs.

I had the very same thing happen to me!! I became pregnant during mortuary school, and when I graduated, I took a job in Maryland where we did not have to go out at night, just take calls. We had a removal team that went so us funeral directors didn't have to go out. You are very right, it is so unlike any other job. I would highly recommend looking for a firm that you work 9-5 (believe it or not, they do exist, I worked for a wonderful firm) Good luck and God bless you and your family!

Usually if you are a licensed embalmer, you can get a job at a funeral home instead of being an independant. They usually dont have just one funeral director there to work around the clock, normally a couple have days and the other have nights or sometimes a mixture of both. That way you wont be the only one they are depending on 24 hrs a day. You can take the shifts that are most convenient for you and your baby.

It is surprising the amount of people who have jobs that require them to work around the clock. I am not sure of your financial situation, but there are also programs that help keep your daycare costs down. Try calling the Human Services department in your area and explain to them what you are looking for. They know of other agencies and companies that might be able to help you.
Or, if you think you could afford it, how about a nanny? It is tough to pay the prices for childcare, but maybe if you have an extra room you can make a good deal with someone, maybe even a friend, that can watch your child in turn for a roon to call their own.
