Well, even though you are asking about an apples to oranges comparison (square feet are two-dimensional and cubic yards are three-dimensional), technically, an infinite number of square feet can be contained within a cubic yard.

However, if you are simply asking how many cubic feet are in a cubic yard that is 3x3x3 = 27 cubic feet.

A square foot has only 2 dimensions (L and W, no thickness), therefore, there an infinite number of square feet in a cubic yard.

It doesn't work that way--the square feet can only be measured on a plane surface, not a 3 dimensional one.

if your pouring concrete, a yard = a 9x9 foot area x 4" deep and 9x9 is 81 square feet.
