Software development plans always have contingency built into them. It's not in case the project fails. It's because it's just about impossible to guesstimate the size correctly at the start of a project - and I've been on projects for 20 years.

Another opportunity for a contingency would be in negotiations. If the other party isn't offering anything more than your predetermined contingency, it ultimately allows you to walk away from the negotiation, rather than accepting an inferior offer - NOTE: expend all efforts to make sure the predetermined contingency is as good as possible.

A police officer would not go into a dangerous situation without back up, and a plan for retreat if things get nasty. So, people in business and everday life should have a secondary plan, just in case the original plan backfires. This is just a common sense approach to tackling problems in life, and problems in business.
