Having someone like a mother passing away is a really hard thing. Hes going to be depressed for quite some time (possibly for more than couple of months). All you can say is your sorry for his/her loss and you could stop by every once in a while to comfort him/her. Cards wont do anything, as for food, thats not such a bad idea. When people are depressed, they tend to not eat because thats not what they are thinking of at a time like this. Be prepared from lots of tears and crys

Give your friend some time to his self call him and assure him if he needs someone to talk to that your always there. Also send him a card and some money. It would also be nice to offer help buying the plates, cups, soda, or food.

Say you are so sorry for her lost and that if you can help her in anyway you are there for her, thats the meaning of "friendship". Do not send a card, be present for her so she knows she can count on you and if she should need something she will telll you OK.

If it's a close friend, your company is the best gift. If you're not very close, a card, flowers or a tray of food sent to their home. Sorry.

a card is good, a call is good, let them know that you are there for them. I lost my mother just a few monghts ago, she had cancer and was really sick for a few monthes before, the hardest thing for me besideds faceing the fact that I was loosing my mother was that not one of my friends called or tryed to be there for me even though they knew about it, because they didnt know what to say. all you have to do, is let your friend know you are there, thinkng about them, and caring about them.

The most important thing is to spend time with your friend and just listen to them. Being there for them when they hurt is a real gift.
