A while back I wrote something about a sick husband and an overbearing mother in law. In that peice I wrote how my hubby was suffering from a severe form of cancer and how she wanted to take over our entire house leaving us all arguing and bickering day in and day out. My mother in law came from Tennesee and the out come of the whole thing was that she and my husband decided to move down to tennessee. Her reason, to get away from me, my husbands reason to get a second opinion from their oncology experts down there. I plead with my husband not to go but his mind was made up. His chicago doctor didn't think the trip was a good idea. My husband was not down there a week before he was hospitalized in critical condition. He was severely weak and on life support. I called my mother in law every day for 2 weeks before a child picked up the phone and informed me that my husband was in the hospital again. My mother in law did not plan to tell me and my kids anything. I was so furious.

I rushed down there as fast as I could. I took my husbands oldest son who is 20 with me and I also asked my best friend to come for support as well. When I got the hospital my mother in law was very hostile toward me. She did not want me talking to the doctors and nurses about anything. Needless to say I did anyway and I found out that my husband had been on life support for 3 weeks. He was alert but no longer able to breath for himself. When I was taking care of him he was alert and ambulatory. The doctors felt they had a good chance of fighting the cancer. I could not believe how weak and fragile he became in such a short time. The doctors did not think he would make it much longer. He was literally drowning from access fluids on his lungs and his bones were so weak and brittle. He could not breath on his own at all. My husband was still aware of his surroundings. He knew the people around him but he was no longer able to communicate in any way shape or form. All he can do is blink

His mother tried to wake him to let him know he had visitors but all he would do was open his eyes for a few seconds and then close them again. Our son called out to him, nothing. Our friend called out to him and she got nothing. His sister called out to him and got nothing as well. I was standing in the back of the crowd afraid, heart pumping so fast not knowing what to say. When the crowd around my husbands bed opened up I spoke two words, "Hey babe" and wonder of all wonders my husbands eyes flew open "wide!" He look directly at me and his hand flew to his disfigured mouth. He just stared at me. And suddenly words just came from no where. I told my husband that I love him and still believe in him. I told him that God has the last say in this and that he needs to hang in there and fight. Everyone else in the room stood in stunned silence as they saw tears roll down my husbands eyes. I told him that I did not want to leave his side but I had to go back home to our little ones

When I got back to our hometown the very next day my husbands doctor called me on my cell. He told me "mam, are you sitting down?" I said no do I need to be? His doctor then told me that he did not know what happened between the time we left the hospital and today but when he and the other doctors went to listen to my husbands lungs they did not hear the usual gurgling noises that told them there was an abundance of water there. They decided to do another x ray of his lungs and surprise of all surprises his lungs looked normal! Now they are talking about weening him off his respirator and making preparations to prepare his body for cancer treatments again. The doctor was just plain flabbergasted! He cannot say what happened to the water on my husbands lungs! He just said it was a miracle. I fell to my knees thanking God. My husband still has a chance. Now my mother in law calls me from my husbands room while I am in Chicago. She wants me to say words of inspiration to my husband now

My mother in law and I get along a little bit better now. She respects that my husband loves me and obviously misses me. I can't be certain about this recent positive turn of events but I am certain that nothing can overcome the power of love.

Oh my God, what a horrible time you have had to suffer.
Boys will always be their mother's son and , not in such a horrible way but, I have to "fight" my mother-in-law too. We live in America and our family lives in the UK and still she is able to put her stamp on him.
Background: I married a man with 2 children, who are now adult - relationship - fantastic. Because I am not English my mother-in-law blames whatever goes wrong on me.
Last year it came to a head when we were visiting them over something stupid and she spat some venomous things at me in which she blamed me for always disrupting the whole family, not for any other reason but totell me yet again how she deep down feels. I packed my bags and started phoning a taxi, being sure my husband yet again would be sitting on the fence, but he said he would come with me and we stayed the remainder of our stay in a hotel. She started eating humble pie as she could not believe my husband went with me. I was the only one to apologise for using some bad language...nothing else..to this day she has never apologised!!! I have learned by that experience that you have to stand up for yourself.
I so admire your whole attitude in that crisis time and YES it is the power of love that got your husband through. Hopefully we will hear soon that he has returned home to you where YOU can look after him and get him better. I wish you so much good luck and the biggest hug in the world. My God, you must be such a strong woman!

Love - Faith - Hope - Prayer. All work in mysterious ways! I believe that the human mind can do things that we can't even imagine! Your husband may have thought he lost you for good. When you spoke to him - he heard you! He started fighting!
No - not a coincidence - a definite miracle!
