I had a doctor tell me it is not but everyone else tells me it is. I guess I am asking if it is virally contagious.

Streptococci can be passed to another, if they have a lowered resistance. However, this is one of the bacterium which can be found in the mouth at any given time. It is an opportunistic bug which will attack any time your resistance level is reduced. It is also one which creates toxins which cause problems in other areas, so must be taken very seriously and treated as soon as possible.

Yes, strep throat is very contagious. Every time I have had it I have caught it from someone. It's not contagious once you have started anti biotics...well after a couple days of them anyway.

At certain points or stages it is...I've known of people who've caught it from other people...I mean otherwise, how would we get it? Perhaps after a certain period of time, or when symptoms start to show, it is no longer contagious. As with measles/chicken px, you can catch it before the person even has the bumps. Hope this helps you!

Extremely contagious. As a kid my whole family had it in the course of a month b/c we kept passing it along. Stay home until you've finished your fever, and take all the antibiotic that the dr prescribes, or you could get sick all over again...

Strep throat is NOT a virus. It is the streptococci bacteria. And yes, it is contagious but with proper precautions it can be prevented.
