The big roaches (tree roaches) were probably stirred up during the construction of the apartment building and that's why you're seeing so many of them.
The only way to get them under control is to have all the apartments sprayed by a professional exterminator. I would call the apartment manager and request it. If the apartment manager gives you the run around and insists that they can only contract an exterminator to spray YOUR apartment, then I would go over his/her head and call the property owner. You might also want to contact your neighbors and ask them to do the same thing.
Often times, the manager will only be willing to spray the apartments of those who complain and will only do it once until they complain again. But this won't get rid of the roaches. In order for the extermination to be effective, the entire building has to be sprayed because the roaches live in the walls (among other places) and can move from apartment to apartment that are in the same building. So if you want to get them to exterminate the entire building, try to get your neighbors who live in the same building on-board when you make the request. If you're having roach problems, then so are the other tenants in the building.
Also, you might want to ask them to spray the yard or the perimeter as well so that you can enjoy sitting out on the porch at night.
Another option: If you don't want to go through the hassle of trying to get the manager to contract an exterminator for the entire building or if you don't want to be labeled as a "trouble maker" - you can always type up a note that says, "If you don't get an exterminator to spray the building, we're going to call the Health Department." Don't sign it and drop it in the after hours deposit box or put it in an envelope and tape it to the front door of the leasing office. But call the Health Department first and ask if they accept anonymous complaints in case your note is ignored by the apartment manager because if they don't, then you might want to reconsider this option. There's no point in being anonymous with the apartment manager if you can't be anonymous with the Health Department.

My mom used to have roaches. Her landlord bought her about four or five Riddex electronic pest repellents that plug into outlets. Also go to the grocery store and buy bay leaves in the bulk. Roaches dont like them. My mom would put them in the corners, on countertops, in cabinets, wherever. Just change them about twice a week. It really works! No more roaches (10 years and running)

Go to a do it yourself exterminating store. You can buy industrial strength products for a quarter of what an exterminator would charge to come out to your property. I had a horrible roach problem when I moved into a new apt. and these people steered me in the right direction, with the right products, and I've never had a problem since!

Call the building super. Call the exterminator. If you live in a hot climate, roaches are more common.
If they invaded your apartment, I am sure they are at the neighbors, too. There is power in numbers so speak to the super together. You might get a better response.

Get the Raid kits with the egg stoppers - it will sterilize the colony and prevent them from breeding. Works wonders. They'll be gone in two weeks.
Just make sure you change them every three months like clockwork.

Eat them... yum. Once the roaches find out you'll eat them, they'll all be like, "Ahhh, don't go in there! The person who lives there eats us!"
