The battles usually start out with the two of em throwing stuff at each other, but undoubtably leads to insane hand-to-hand combat in strange distorted backgrounds that usually represent or resemble the area where they physically were, or have been recently. Let me find some pic's for ya!

I played the X-men legends game and at one point Jean Gray had to fight a brainwashed Professor Xavier and on the Astral Plane it came out as regular hand to hand fighting even if they were only fighting telepathecally on the regular plane.

You have to realize that, since it is such a visual medium, and since the purpose of comic books is to sell, and since the artist and writer can make up their own special effects, they will portray it as some kind of physical combat, even if it would be more realistic (but there isn't really any such thing, is there!) to portray it as two people sitting there staring into each others eyes and sweating heavily. It is more dramatic if it is shown as physical combat, even if it is portrayed 'symbolically' or in 'another dimension' or 'with psionic abilities'.

It would probably be like this: 2 people staring at each other, concentrating hard. There will be mist-like beings appearing from their heads and attacking each other`- hence the pyschic attacks!
