As one of the users suggested, I think the best way to handle this would be to turn it into a joke, and pretend I don't care. I would love suggestions that do NOT involve the reason that I gained the weight. Something in good taste, but funny, please. What can I say that will give them a good response but keep me sane?
Thanks in advance.

Why do you FEEL the need to explain anything about your weight gain to anyone. The people who are rude enough to comment/ask do not deserve an answer. They are uncouth in their own behalf. You are by far, better than they are. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. Let them waste their time by guessing. They will soon get bored and move on to someone/something else. If you feed into them, you just fuel their snide behavior.

If someone brings it up, just tell them you don't want to talk about it. And if they keep saying the same thing, just tell them that if they any self confidence they wouldn't be talking about you like that. Or, if you'd like to use a joke, just laugh with everyone else, because if you laugh with them then they'll know that you don't care about what they say. And even if what they're saying hurts you, don't let it show right then and there.

Maybe something along the lines that you're storing up for winter. That's what I always say. :) That way you won't get so cold so quickly.
And I think it's a good idea to turn it into something you can laugh at!

If someone comments about the weight you've gained, that's pretty rude! You could say, "I gained weight so you'd have something to b*tch about."

Tell them your getting ready for winter (just like the bears) and you may join them in hibernation.

I was raped and I must protect myself from all men by making myself unattractive and carrying a gun. See, the gun part will shut them up.

How clever of you to notice!!! And mention a flaw that they have. Say, why yes I have but it didn't make me mean.
